Both players are from Georgia, both had challenging childhoods, both started their college careers on defense, and both have been voted to four Pro Bowls with the Colts. (Donaldson played in two others with Dallas.)

The difference is that Donaldson was a second-round draft pick while Saturday went undrafted. He had to take the scenic route to the NFL, but as a lot of travelers can tell you, the scenic route is often filled wtih agonizing delays.

Saturday was cut by Baltimore after graduating from North Carolina, and waited nearly a year before a tryout offer came from the Colts. He had to tell a lie to get the opportunity, but it's a good thing he did. An honest man would never have gotten the chance.

Saturday is the perfect center to pair ...

A half-fast talk with Ray Donaldson

If I had known this was going to happen, I would have talked twice as fast.

The One on One episode with Ray Donaldson will air in a 30-minute format tonight to allow the Fever to play their playoff game. Consider it the Cliff Notes version of the story, and the fastest half-hour in radio.

If you want the full story, there's always the podcast on this site.

Ray Donaldson's father died while his mother was two months into her pregnancy with him and his twin sister. So while Mom worked two or three jobs to support the family, Ray developed a burning desire to make it to the NFL to make her life easier.

He became a second-round draft pick of the Baltimore Colts in 1980 after being moved from linebacker to center in college, then moved with the team to Indianapolis in '84. He had the misfortune of playing on a lot of bad teams, but was voted to four Pro Bowls with the Colts. He finished his career with Dallas, where he made two more Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl ring.

He's got a good story, and you can hear it on Sunday's edition of One on One at 11 a.m.

Funny thing, there's a theme developing among the people I've interviewed. They weren't spoiled kids who sat in front of the TV or computer all day as kids. They were out doing something. Landry -- whose mother and father drove a bus -- collected cans for recycling and had a paper route.

He also talks about his occasionally contentious relationship wiht Matt Painter, the night he was shot in Houston and his future in the NBA.

Who do you blame for Terry Dischinger not being better-known in Indiana?
Maybe Ohio State. It’s basketball teams of the early 1960s won the Big Ten championship from 1960-64, won the NCAA championship in ‘60 and were runners-up the following two years.
In an era when only one team per conference could compete in the NCAA tournament, Dischinger played in relative obscurity at Purdue. Still, he was a first-team All-American as a junior and senior and led the Big Ten in scoring all three of his varsity seasons.
He also was a starter on the legendary 1960 Olympic basketball team that won by an average of more than 40 points, and the NBA’s co-Rookie of the Year despite playing a partial schedule while finishing his degree requirements at Purdue.
He went on to become an orthodontist in the Portland area, and recently was awarded a patent for a device that ...

Don't let Dick pass you by

One thing I didn't ask Dick Passwater in our conversation for One on One is whether people had made fun of his name when he was a kid.

I'm guessing they didn't, because he doesn't seem like the kind of guy you mess with. He dropped out of high school to join the Navy during WWII, was in Normandy for D Day, drove stock cars, and made millions in business. He's still going strong at 84 -- drove his Corvette from Florida to Indy for the 500 in May -- and has a sharp memory. He raced in a tuxedo on the local circuit, and will tell you all about the NASCAR driver who raced with a monkey in his car.

You can catch his story tonight on One on One at 7 p.m., or by podcast anytime.

Turner's turn on One on One

Not many Indiana sports figures have a more dramatic story than Landon Turner. Not many have a more uplifting story, either.

Turner was an instrumental figure in Indiana's run to the 1981 NCAA basketball championship. A 6-10 power forward, it took him about 2 1/2 years to get in line with coach Bob Knight's way of thinking, but once he did the Hoosiers rolled. Turner made the all-Final Four team as IU defeated LSU and North Carolina.

About four months later, Turner was left paralyzed from the waist down after he lost control of the automobile he was driving to King's Island. It destroyed his opportunity to play in the NBA, but 29 years later he's living a happy, productive life.

He'll tell his story, and a classic Bob Knight story, in the next edition of One on One. But he's one of the most popular, thanks to his blog at www.clubtrillion.com and his classic video on YouTube. Do a search for Mr. Rainmaker and you'll find it.

Titus became college basketball's Everyman, a walk-on who learned how to have fun with his role. He let fans in on the unique experience with a slam-dunk sense of humor, exploring such weighty issues as what to do when you have diahrrea while sitting on the bench during a game. He's also got a great story about the time he refused to shake Gene Keady's hand as a five-year-old at Purdue's basketball camp.

Titus' blog earned himself a place in the Globetrotter's draft, and a fiance as well. Not bad for a guy who scored nine career points.

LeBron James will play in Miami. Just so there’s no doubt about this being a prediction rather than a followup to his televised announcement on ESPN, check the time it was posted on the website.
Tonight will be about more than a free agent’s announcement, however. It’s another step toward a new age in media and -- regrettably for this former newspaperman -- away from the relevance of print media.

Today, athletes can control their message. If not in a one-hour special on ESPN, then at least by Twitter, as Kevin Durant did earlier this week. You’re not likely to learn of it when the newspaper hits whatever it hits outside your house in the morning, assuming you even subscribe to a newspaper -- unless you hadn’t watched SportsCenter or conducted another attention-deficit scan of the internet the previous night.

James has taken the simultaneous blessing and ...

George goes the distance

Many of the interviews I conduct for One on One run much longer than the 40 minutes that air in the show. Then I spend more time trimming the conversation to fit the time allotment than I did conducting it.
Not so with Paul George, the Indiana Pacers’ first-round draft pick. I sat down with George on Thursday, less than an hour after he signed his contract, and knocked out an interview for Sunday’s episode. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to keep him going long enough to fill 40 minutes -- the guy just turned 20 in May -- but it turned out to be no problem. He was a communications major at Fresno State, so he’s talkative enough. And, he was willing to talk about more than his basketball career.

Not saying George is the next Reggie Miller, but there are some similarities:
