It was a given that with the success of its basketball program and heightened national profile, Butler was going to be presented with wide ranging opportunities. Why the A-10? From a university perspective the A-10 is a perfect fit. The conference is made up of schools with similar academic values of similar size with a mostly private feel. Never discount potential for the almighty dollar. Butler now has open doors to the east coast student that it had not previously targeted. IU has set the model for east coast recruiting. Parents on the east coast have come to realize the schools in the Midwest offer great educations in terrific settings for minimal cost as compared to schools out east. In terms of basketball it is a no-brainer…as David Woods points out in The Star. Let me explain. I'm against the "everyone gets a ribbon” mentality that is so pervasive in society. I believe competition is important and the ability to learn and grow from success and failure helps make for a more rounded and self-confident adult. With that as a basis, I then have to be against class basketball… right? Background on me and the one class state tourney... My fondest memories of basketball don't come from playing at IU or coaching at IU or Bowling Green. They come from playing and watching the one class state tourney. The absolute best day of the year was Regional Saturday at Gary West Side High School. My dad brother and an assortment of friends would get to the games early sit in awe of guys like Rich Valavicious, Jon Chones, Willie ...

Dakich or Tom Jones?

Freshman hits full court shot

Freshman Koby Pierce hits nearly a full court shot at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

They can't go back to Miami needing two W’s for a title. No matter what happens, the Heat have two home games in their back pocket. Why bring this up? Here's a stat for you…95% of games between evenly matched teams are won by the team that plays harder and with greater sense of urgency. These teams appear to be evenly matched.
Key for Miami...what are the players doing with their free time? NBA players are young, rich, and popular. That lends itself to trouble when staying in one city for any length of time. They also bore easily. You hear athletes say "it's a business trip". Ok… when you’re in a great city for a few days on business, how many of you go straight to the hotel when the business day is over?
