His mother pulled him out of AAU games when she thought they were interfering with his studies, and he passed on entering the NBA draft after his junior season at Georgetown, although he was projected as a lottery pick, to get his degree. He wound up going to the Pacers on a draft night trade with Toronto, and has established himself as the likely center of the future for the franchise. He's established a fan section, Area 55, which he hopes to expand into a community action group, and he's working hard in the off-season to establish himself as a player, too.

I'll go One on One with Hibbert Sunday at 11 a.m. and again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Podcast available here on the website after Sunday's broadcast.

Everett encore tonight

Most One on One conversations are friendly enough. But sometimes it gets ugly, as was the case when Jim Everett stopped by to chat with Jim Rome nearly 20 years ago.

That encounter, immortalized by YouTube, is one of the highlights of tonight's episode with Everett, which airs tonight at 7 p.m.

He'll also explain the fluke occurrence that got him to Purdue, pass along a Leon Burtnett-ism, and explain why he's living on Richard Nixon's former property in San Clemente.
Everett left Purdue as its single season passing leader, setting a record that held until Drew Brees blew through town. He was the third pick in the NFL draft, by the Houston Oilers, but earned a trade to the L.A. Rams with a holdout. He was rolling in L..A., prominent enough to be featured on the cover of magazines such as G.Q., but it all came apart with the Rams. As the talent around him declined, so did his confidence. But the heat from the media increased, which led to an appearance with a young television host trying to make a name for himself, which led to upset feelings and overturned tables.

You'll love the background story to his appearance ...

Brad Stevens becomes a two-timing guest

Brad Stevens made his first One on One appearance last spring, before Butler wrapped the world of college basketball around its little finger in the NCAA tournament.

A few things have changed in his world since then, so he'll make a second visit to discuss. He's Brad Stevens Inc. now, and has an agent, but the basic approach will remain the same.

It airs Sunday at 11 a.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m. The podcast goes up after the Sunday airing for eternity, or something similar.

Glenn, however, deserves credit for having the integrity to recognize his shifting priorities and not take steal from the team when his heart wasn't in it. He left $4.5 million on the table to spend more time with his family, start taking classes toward an MBA from Purdue and work on his charitable foundation, DREAM Alive.

He'll talk about that decision, tell a good Jim Mora story, and offer insight why it sometimes pays for colleges to lie to recruits in Wednesday's episode of One on One at 7 p.m.

Highlights of his story include:

* Growing up as one of 12 kids whose father died when he was 14.

* Choosing IU over Oscar Robertson's pitch from Cincinnati.

* Playing on 1979 Pan American Games team when Bob Knight had the infamous run-in with a Puerto Rican police officer.

* Surviving a marijuana bust that cost three teammates their scholarships.

* Overcoming career-threatening back surgery and being named Big Ten MVP despite playing just six conference games.

* Nearly becoming a Pacer during his NBA playing career.

* Starting Woody's Club, an inner city golf program in Houston.

Oh, and his back, too.

Woodson arrived on campus the season after IU won the 1976 championship, and left the season before it won the '81 title. He did play on a Big Ten title team, however, in 1980, and was named conference MVP despite playing just six league games.

His return from back surgery sparked a six-game winning streak to end the season, culminating in an overtime win over an Ohio State team that featured Clark Kellogg and Herb Williams. That game, a genuine classic, clinched the Big Ten title.

Woodson went on to play 11 seasons in the NBA, and just completed a six-year coaching run with the Atlanta Hawks. He'll likely be back as a head coach before long. The NBA has a bustling recycling program, and he's deserving anyway.

IU went with Cam Cameron, an alum who had NFL experience and seemed young enough to be able to relate to recruits.

Notre Dame hired Bob Davie, who turned down an offer from Purdue, and had been having great success as its defensive coordinator.

Purdue? It hired a guy from Wyoming named Joe Tiller, who looked like your Uncle Fred (assuming you're Caucasian) and seemed too far out of the loop to succeed.

Naturally, it turned out that Tiller was the one who succeeded, taking Purdue to 10 bowl games in 12 years and leaving on his own terms despite a faltering finish. Cameron and Davie were fired.

Tiller's got a good story to tell, coming from a blue collar household in Ohio, getting a scholarship to Montana, and then spending considerable time in ...

Lock your jaw, Coach Mallory is next

Bill Mallory was a coach out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Nobody had a more pure heart for the profession than he did. He was in it for all the right reasons, gave his players discipline without embarrassing them and set an example for toughness and integrity.

He also loves -- absolutely loves -- to talk football, so when I recorded an interview with him for Sunday's edition fo One on One the conversation lasted nearly two hours. It will be a chore to cut it down to about 40 minutes, but there's good stuff there.

He'll talk about the impact his wife's pregnancies had on his football team, the tumble he took down the stairs to accept an early job offer and his trip to Michigan State's locker room to congratulate them on a critical win over the Hoosiers.

He's still active in football. Both players are from Georgia, both had challenging childhoods, both started their college careers on defense, and both have been voted to four Pro Bowls with the Colts. (Donaldson played in two others with Dallas.)

The difference is that Donaldson was a second-round draft pick while Saturday went undrafted. He had to take the scenic route to the NFL, but as a lot of travelers can tell you, the scenic route is often filled wtih agonizing delays.

Saturday was cut by Baltimore after graduating from North Carolina, and waited nearly a year before a tryout offer came from the Colts. He had to tell a lie to get the opportunity, but it's a good thing he did. An honest man would never have gotten the chance.

Saturday is the perfect center to pair ...
