Who the Hell is Kent Sterling?
Lou Piniella Loses Mind; Cubs Win

If ever a team needed a hard reboot, it was the Cubs as they beat the Pirates to close out an abysmal road trip.  Lou went bananas after a Shag Crawford wannabe called Randy Wells out after he clearly beat the throw.  He threw his hat and screamed for awhile - maybe venting after being voted the manager ballplayers would least like to play for.

Milton Bradley played after skipping yesterday's game.  Lot's to do in Pittsbugh, I guess.  Only 17,054 were announced as being there, but the reality was much less, and Pittsburghers had to be somewhere.  Maybe Bradley followed them.

If Bradley were a nuclear power plant, Jack Lemmon would be staring at his controls, screaming at Jane Fonda and threatening to kick Wilford Brimley's ass.  Bradley is at DEFCON 1, and Jim Hendry is Dabney Coleman hoping Matthew Broderick can access the WHOPPER and disarm the ...

The Coffee Chronicles: The Cash Register is My Enemy

June 28th, 2009

When I was a kid, I developed a fascination with Wile E. Coyote. I could never quite come to grips with how this seemingly brilliant predator – he was bright enough to study and interpret complex schematics and use them to put together state of the art rockets and other instruments designed to help him grab a meal – could never quite manage to outsmart his arch nemesis, the Road Runner.

The reason I mention this in the context of my coffee blog is that I see a depressing parallel between the Wile E./Road Runner relationship and the one I find myself involved in with the cash register at Hubbard and Cravens.

I knew I would struggle with this job at the beginning, since it’s always difficult to feel comfortable with tasks that are new and unfamiliar, but it never occurred to me that ...

MISS KRAVY!

Hate to say it but I miss everybody's "most-hated" Indy sports columnist. OK, so he is Indy's ONLY sports columnist.  But you get my drift.  Kravy has been out all week on a well earned vacation.  I was out last Thurs and Fri so it's been a while since we've been together.  He is back Monday and I can't wait. Now, I have enjoyed the company of Pacers voice Mark Boyle, who really has done a brilliant job filling in for Bob this week.  Mark is one of the most interesting characters you'll ever run into.  He is also one of the BEST game announcers in the business and we are lucky to have him here in our town.
But Kravy is, well, Kravy.  And there is only one!

Masters Contest

We're having a Masters contest in which you can win a pair of tickets to the Kid Rock / Lynard Skynard concert this July at Verizon Wireless Concert Center.

Excluding Tiger Woods, we're allowing people to pick one golfer that they think will win the tournament this weekend at Augusta.  You cannot pick the same golfer as someone else, therefore once a player has been picked, he is off limits for everyone else.  The picks also must be phoned in to the show and you must make your pick on the air - no emails allowed to make your pick.

We will continue the contest with picks until 12:00 Noon ET on Thursday, April 9.  A list of golfers already selected follows, so do your homework and find the best golfers remaining and call us Thursday between 10:00 and 1:00.

Golfers taken:
Angel Cabrera
K.J. Choi
Stewart Cink...

Trackside Blog
Wednesday July 1st show notes

“Trackside with Cavin and Kevin” is again on Wednesday night this week (July 1st) from 8-10 pm eastern.  We’re back to Thursdays from 7-9 next week.  There are 2 massive topics and other smaller issues to address tonight and we’ll cover as much as possible.

Obviously, Tony George’s exit from a leadership position with IMS/IRL/Hulman & Company will be topic #1.  Did Tony have a choice to maintain leadership at least in title or was he totally booted by his family?  Why did he also give up control of the IRL (was that going to be simply a title?)?  What impact will the new leadership have on the IndyCar Series?  Are there are any more changes or additions coming?  At what point will we hear from Jeff Belskus, who is now the top man for the Indy Racing League?   Those are just a few of the questions.

Secondly, we have ...

Racing to conclusions

The thought process of those doubting Pacers draft pick Tyler Hansbrough can be distilled to two simplistic beliefs. Common beliefs, but simplistic just the same.

1. He’s a four-year collegian, which immediately arouses suspicion in the hello-I-must-be-going world of college basketball. If he was any good, why wouldn’t he have entered the draft two years ago?

2. He’s a white guy, and of course we all know that white guys are fine, hard-working fellows, except for the few who have a lot of tattoos, but are athletically challenged and suited for nothing more than role-playing in the NBA, while the black guys are freaks of nature who don‘t always play hard or with discipline.

Or so the thinking goes within the Culture of Stereotypes.

Hansbrough has inspired a stream of thinly-veiled, even unintended, racial comments on the talk shows and message boards. Not racist comments, racial comments. They illustrate, once again, ...

Random Thoughts while watching Game ONE of the NBA Finals

Player introductions just wrapped up. The Lakers are a team with a lot of history…so while I understand it…I still feel that their pre-game festivities are lame. I’m a guy that likes to get hyped up…Cleveland does it best…LA lags behind, but again, history is a big reason for their subtle intro.

ABC just ran their opening montage, showing images of past champions. Great piece. I still get goose-bumps when I hear ‘Marvelous’ say “Oh! A spec-tac-u-lar move…by MICHAEL JORDAN!”

Call me crazy but I really enjoy ABC’s crew of Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy, and Mark Jackson. I’ve always thought ABC’s coverage (compared to NBC when I was growing up) was rather poor. But over time they’ve finally found the right combo. The threesome has a great chemistry which is clearly evident during the broadcast. Mark and Jeff are clever, and Mike knows how to stay out of the ...

What I Do...

I go out of my way to talk to veterans. It's the least that I can do. I respect them, appreciate their service, especially those old timers that fought for us in World War II.

I was in a store last week with a guy that I work with on my day job. I saw an older gentleman wearing a WWII Army Air Corp ball cap at the check out line. I waited outside the store to have a word with him, thank him for his service, ask where he served, what he did.

He came out of the store and I went over to him and got his attention, shook his hand, talked to him for a few minutes. He served on a bomber, flew close to thirty missions, proudly spoke to me about what he did, his crew, his plane...how they went about their business of winning a ...
