Who the Hell is Kent Sterling?

All week, when San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner showed up on TV, I attacked him for his idiotic looking hair. I'm relatively adroit at mocking people, so I thought my wife should have laughed a little bit at what I said. Not once did I get the response I was looking for. She just gave me one uneasy glance after another. It never occurred to me that the looks were any more than her thinking I was a cruel bastard.
Then I caught a look at my own image in the bathroom mirror. If I had gone to Studio 2000 and asked for a "Norv Turner", I could not have had more Norv-like hair.
In the living room, I asked Julie whether she held her laughter because my hair looked like Norv's, and she gave me that same pathetic look I get from her when I wear ...

New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress went to a club Friday night and shot himself in the thigh with a gun he brought to the club. That much we know. There are reports that Burress will be charged with carrying an unregistered handgun - which is a serious crime in New York City.
Indiana sports fans have seen something similar in the recent past, although without the punchline of the athlete shooting himself. Stephen Jackson fired his gun at a car outside an Indianapolis club a couple of years ago, and Jamal Tinsley's brother fired a gun from a car in pursuit of an assailant who shot into Tinsley's car wounding a Pacers employee.
The question that consistently comes to mind when I read about stories like these is why do guys with millions of dollars go to clubs where the chances of violence are high enough to ...

How many humungous plays has Robert Mathis made this season for the Colts? And it's not just the volume of plays, but the timing of those plays. Sacks, forced fumbles, and now a fumble recovery that Mathis took to the house for the deciding points in a crucial win against a Browns team thought to be hapless but looked like anything but.
The Colts had trouble exectuting their passing game in the rotten late November Cleveland weather. The running game wasn't much more productive. Joseph Addai's fumble set the tone, but still when it counted, the Colts found a way to get it done for the fifth consecutive week.
Again, as it seems to be each week, it was up to the defense to stop a final drive by the opposition, but that was aided by Browns coach Romeo Crennel opting against using a timeout with 2:45 left. That allowed the Colts to ...

There is an inertia that accompanies broadcast outlets. No matter what you do, they sort of roll along in the same direction. Changing that direction and image is really hard.
For generations, CBS has been the "old" network. CBS would rather say nothing than say something interesting. The talent reflects that philosophy. Jim "Hello, friends" Nance is the face of sports journalism at CBS. Here's a test. For all of the huge sporting events Nantz has covered, can you remember a single thing the guy has ever said? He's game in trying to come up with a clever phrase, but delivers with such blandness that nothing he says sticks.
Those of us watching the Colts vs. Browns game this afternoon are enjoying the broadcasting stylings of Dick Enberg and Randy Cross. Forty years ago, I loved Enberg as the host of Sports Challenge - maybe the coolest sports ...

In Durham, NC, Kevin White is smiling, or at least nowhere near as miserable as he would be if he still had an office in South Bend. The extenision he gave Charlie Weis will for some time be the measuring for moronic overreactions to momentary success. I hope the president at Duke has explained that the coffers aren't quite so deep there as at Notre Dame.
In South Bend, Jack Swarbrick is making plans to either fire Weis, or figure out a way to justify keeping Charlie around for another year to an angry and impatient mob in St. Joseph County. The momentum of last year's failure has been impossible to stop, and now has a choke hold on the program. Recruiting is impossible when everyone expects a change at the top of the program. No kid or family will commit, and every coach against whom Notre Dame is recruiting ...
