INDIANAPOLIS – Throughout several off-season moves, Chris Ballard has mentioned the biggest reason why his team will play a tougher schedule in 2019.

Unlike 2018, the Colts will consistently see some strong quarterback play this fall.

Opposing Quarterbacks 2018 vs. 2019

Andy Dalton | Philip Rivers

Alex Smith | Marcus Mariota

Carson Wentz | Matt Ryan

DeShaun Watson | Derek Carr

Tom Brady | Patrick Mahomes

Sam Darnold | Deshaun Watson

Derek Anderson | Joe Flacco

Derek Carr | Ben Roethlisberger

Blake Bortles | Ryan Fitzpatrick

Blaine Gabbert | Nick Foles

Ryan Tannehill | Deshaun Watson

Cody Kessler | Marcus Mariota

Deshaun Watson | Jameis Winston

Dak Prescott | Drew Brees

Eli Manning | Cam Newton

Blaine Gabbert | Nick Foles

Last year, the Colts played 2 quarterbacks (Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz) who finished the year top-10 in quarterback rating.

Of that same group, the Colts will play 5 of those QBs in 2019 (Drew Brees, Patrick Mahomes, Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers and Deshaun Watson), all of whom ranked in the top 6 in quarterback rating last year.

But the depth of this 2019 group really stands out.

Most would label Pro Bowl QBs Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and Derek Carr as middle of the pack signal callers that the Colts face this coming fall.

Knowing what was coming in 2019 played into Ballard’s thinking with his defensive emphasis during the offseason.

“We are playing a lot of teams with some pretty good quarterbacks this year and you’ve got to be able to run them down,” Ballard said.

“When you look at this league now, think about the quarterbacks we’ll face, just go down the list of runners. When they get out of the pocket, we’ve got to track them down.”
